Alfreton Town 1-3 York City

A brace from Sean Newton sent leaders York City on their way to a comfortable three points at the Impact Arena with Danny Clarke grabbing a late consolation on Saturday.

Newton opened the scoring after nine with a free kick which went into the bottom corner, Kempster would add a second four minutes later with a well taken finish into the bottom corner.

Newton added a third for York in the second half with a free kick again which this time took a deflection and went into the bottom corner. Danny Clarke then collected an Amari Morgan-Smith flick on in stoppage time to finish low into the bottom corner in the box but this was merely a consolation.

The game began with both sides were aiming for a foothold in the game, Green fired wide early on before a foul was awarded for the Reds as Ferguson's cross looked for Maguire.

Then with nine gone, the Minstermen took the lead as Newton's free kick nestled into the bottom corner from 20 yards. Josh Wilde looked to respond for the Reds but it was easily claimed by the City goalkeeper.

It was 2-0 on 13 as Kempster collected a through ball and finished low into the bottom corner to give the league leaders a cushion within the game. The second seemed to take the stuffing out of us as we already found ourselves with a mountain to climb with barely a quarter of the game gone.

Jordan Wright denied Ferguson before he pushed away Kempster's effort for a corner. Bobby Johnson floated a free kick which had too much pace on it for Dom Smith to connect.

Alfreton struggled to create in the first half as York remained in control, Maguire turned well before firing wide in the box, Ryan Qualter had a half chance from a stoppage time corner, firing over.

The second half saw improvement from Alfreton compared to a first half which lacked attacking bite. City defended a Bobby free kick well before Wright held a Maguire shot from the edge of the box.

Smith glanced a header wide of the post before Jameson saved well to deny Dale Whitham following an Amari Morgan-Smith pass. Wright tipped Newton's free kick over the bar before Qualter cleared off the line from a corner.

Jameson tipped over a Whitham header as the Reds produced their best move of the game but with 80 gone the contest was over as Newton grabbed his second with another free kick which took a deflection and looped over Wright.

We did score a late consolation on 88 as Danny Clarke volleyed a shot into the bottom corner after Amari's flick on.

But the Reds we're not good enough on the day and it was a deserved win for the league leaders as Alfreton look to wrestle back form in this last portion of the season as Brackley visit the Impact on Saturday, kick off is 3pm.
