Report: Matlock stun below-par Reds to progress

Holders Alfreton Town were knocked out of the Derbyshire Senior Cup as rivals Matlock Town eased to a semi final spot as a below-par performance was punished at a baltic Proctor Cars Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Gladiators struck after just two minutes when Valentine found space outside the D and his low side-footed effort hit the inside of the post and squirmed over the line.

It was two on 17 minutes when former Red Marcus Marshall was played through and his dinked effort was saved by Jordan Wright but the striker latched onto the rebound to finish via a tight angle.

A third was added in the second half on 50 as Tague surged into the box and finished well into the far corner. Dom Smith would grab a consolation just after the hour mark after a neat move saw Ben Tomlinson square the ball to him, but we never capitalised on missed chances and the hosts progressed.
