Billy Heath promised a better season in his second year at the Impact Area and so far he seems to be staying true to his word. In fact, the last time the Reds put together a start anywhere near as good as this one it ended up in promotion to the National League.
That’s right, Alfreton are having their best first quarter of a campaign for almost a decade – since their 2010-11 title winning season.

Now let’s bring it forward a few years and look at how things compare to this time last season.

More points, more goals scored, less leaked – it’s looking good, right?
The addition of Amari Morgan-Smith seems to be coming up trumps – the Reds have 22 goals so far this season compared to 15 at the same point a year ago. They’ve also conceded a couple of less goals too.
But here’s where the nerves might set in.
Stats from the past few years have proven that the early-season play-off place hunters rarely last the course.

Take last season for example, the Reds themselves, Kidderminster Harries and AFC Telford were sitting pretty in the top seven, but they all finished just the other side of the dotted line.

It’s a similar story to the start of the 2017/18 season – the Reds again starting well with 16 points before avoiding the dreaded drop by three points.
In an extreme example, as Tamworth will be able to tell you, the table after ten games means nothing. The Lambs were sixth with 17 points on the board after ten games the season before last but finished in the relegation places, picking up just six wins in their remaining 32 games.
