Alfreton Town 1-2 Darlington

Alfreton Town conceded two goals in two second half late minutes to slump to a first league defeat at the Impact Arena this season and a second straight league loss.

The result leaves the Reds clinging to a play-off position in seventh but also without a win in our last four games in all competitions.

We head taken the lead after just three minutes when Conor Branson glanced home Josh Clackstone's cross but goals from O'Neil on 84 with a far post header and then Donawa on 85 stunned the Reds and claimed the points.

Alfreton started the game very well compared to previous outings and got off to the perfect start when Branson glanced home Clackstone's cross into the bottom corner after just three minutes.

Danny Clarke then dragged his effort wide of the post after showing good strength in the box. Branson went for an overhead kick in the box but there wasn't enough on the shot as Alfreton dominated the early proceedings.

Clackstone and Ryan Qualter defended well in the box as the Quakers looked to respond. Bobby Johnson hit a low free kick straight at former Reds goalie Chris Elliott who held the shot at the far post.

The game the descended into a tight affair with a battle in the midfield and not many chances being created. Dom Smith defended well to block a shot in the box before Branson was booked for us.

The second half saw a real shift in pressure and momentum as the second period progressed, Bobby had a corner but the delivery was poor into the box, the Quakers countered but Thompson was offside.

The chances soon started to come for the visitors, Thompson had a free header in the box which deflected behind for a corner. Campbell then found space in the box and rounded Andrew only to be denied by Ryan Qualter who nipped in to make the tackle in the box with the goal gaping.

O'Neill headed over the bar before Josh Thacker blocked a cross from the right for another Quakers corner which was cleared.

Reds attacks were rare in the second half as we got deeper and deeper and invited the pressure on, Branson flashed a shot over the bar before on 84 minutes; Darlington grabbed a deserved leveller.

A free kick was blocked away before being recycled out wide where the right sided cross was headed in at the far post unmarked by O'Neill. Then under a minute later it was 2-1 when Andrew saved Campbell's shot but only for the ball to go straight into the path of Donawa who slotted into the bottom corner.

It sent the away fans wild as they claimed a first away win of the season and it was another poor result for the Reds whose first half dominance only warranted one goal, the second half saw the legs become heavy and the pressure grow and the unbeaten run at the Impact Arena came to an end as a result.

Next up, we travel to Leamington on the 12th October with no scheduled fixture prior due to our FA Cup exit.
