Leamington 0-1 Alfreton Town

Bobby Johnson hit another goal of the season contender as the Reds returned to winning ways at Leamington on Saturday to climb back to fourth in the National League North.

Bobby collected a pass before flicking the ball up and rifling a shot which flew over the Brakes goalie and into the top corner after eight minutes. It was a truly sensational goal which saw Alfreton claim a much needed win after a refreshed two weeks out.

We started the game fairly well with Amari Morgan-Smith being picked out by Josh Clackstone, Amari chested down to Danny Clarke but the Brakes cleared the danger. There were some feisty challenges going in within the early stages as both sides look to get on the front foot.

Leamington pressed but a good header away from Dom Smith was followed up with an important block to deny Walters.

Then with eight gone, we took the lead thanks to sheer brilliance from Bobby Johnson, Danny East's free kick was cleared away only for us to recycle the ball with it being played into Bobby, who flicked it up and hit an unbelievable strike on the turn which flew into the top corner over the goalkeeper.

Leamington attempted a response with Clarke hitting a free kick way over, Charlie Andrew then cleared a corner away. Anderson then headed another Brakes corner wide in the first real opening for the hosts.

The Brakes continued to press but we stayed firm with Dom Smith and Josh Clackstone working hard to clear dangerous crosses. We pushed forward again with around half an hour played, Bobby had a shot blocked in the box, East's cross was headed behind for a corner before East fouled his man to stop the Leamington counter from that corner.

The second half didn't really get going due to a series of stoppages with Danny Clarke and Nyal Blake going down with knocks. English threatened as his cross was cleared before he narrowly missed contact with a cross at the far post.

Andrew then saved well with a shot from distance but the second half lacked tempo and rhythm with free kicks, fouls and injuries breaking up the play throughout the second half. Amari threatened late on with a shot on the turn before forcing the Brakes keeper into another stop moments later.

That proved the major bits of action in the second half as the second period was a low-key affair with no complaints from the Reds who grabbed a much needed win and returned into the play-off positions.

Next up, we face Farsley Celtic at the Impact Arena on Saturday, kick off is 3pm.
