RED HOT ABBEY THE HERO AS REDS LEAVE IT LATE AGAINST CELTS

Alfreton Town win 2-1 against Farsley Celtic at the Impact Arena to continue their strong start to the campaign

The Reds came away with all three points thanks to a stunning free kick from Jed Abbey deep into injury time. Today’s strike was his fifth of the season t leave it level with Charlie Caton of Chester and Dom Tear of Scarborough

Today’s victory means Alfreton Town are now nine games unbeaten against Farsley Celtic.

Billy Heath made one change to the team that beat Needham Market on Monday as Jake Day was replaced by David Moyo.

George Willis starts in net with Max Hunt and Adam Anson as his centre backs. Nathan Newall and Harry Perritt were covering the wings as the full backs.

Covering the centre and sitting as the deepest of the three central midfielders was Adam Lund and he was accompanied by Liam Waldock and captain George Cantrill.

Billy Whitehouse and top goal scorer, Jed Abbey gave the width as they started on the wings leaving David Moyo as the sole striker in the team.

Alfreton started the brighter of the two sides in this game as they dominated the play, but they could not find the finishing touch.
They had the first chance on 22 minutes when David Moyo`s low shot cannoned off the base of the post after two Adam Lund shots were blocked at source at the edge of the box.

Farsley Celtic made the hosts pay as the former Reds man, Tom Allan gave his side the lead five minutes later. His half volley strike came from a corner that was not cleared properly and with Allan unmarked at the back post he found the net, not for the first time since leaving the Reds for pastures new in 2021.

The Reds did not let that goal affect their game plan as they continued pushing for an equaliser, but they could not break down the disciplined Farsley defence. The home side did, however, manage to create a chance through Moyo, but the Zimbabwean international could not find the back of the net from close range with 38 on the watch.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure in the second half as they hunted for their leveller.

In the 55th minute, Moyo was unable to get onto the end of a delivery in to the area. Three minutes later, Anson managed to rise highest in the box, but he saw his header go wide of the post.

Just a minute later, the Reds had a fantastic opportunity saved as Lund produced an excellent cross to the back post where Hunt was running. The centre half attempted a scorpion kick inside the box, but unfortunately for the Englishman, his effort was straight at the Farsley goalkeeper.

In the 70th minute, the visitors had a chance to double their lead as Robbie Fox played a well-timed pass through to former Matlock Town player Danny Greenfield, but he was unable to convert his chance as he skied it over the bar.

After copious amounts of pressure, the hosts found their equaliser in the 76th minute. A beautiful volley from Max Hunt, his first goal for Alfreton since signing in the summer was too much for the Farsley goalkeeper to handle as he got his hand to it but was unable to steer it away from the bottom right corner.

The Reds were let off in the 88th minute as Farsley substitute DJ Sturridge hit the post with a ferocious shot. He had beaten his man on the edge of the box and his strike had also beaten Willis.

Alfreton Town won a free kick on the edge of the box in the third minute of injury time, and it was Jed Abbey who stepped up. A stunning strike into the bottom right corner secured his side all three points. The Dutchman made it five goals in just four games for Billy Heath`s men

Today’s win pushes Alfreton Town’s record of 16 games unbeaten at home to 17 games and their unbeaten run to five matches ahead of a tough midweek trip to Darlington on Tuesday
