The Reds battled well against their League One counterparts

Alfreton Town again performed well against Football League opposition when they entertained Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night, only succumbing to a late Andre Green goal.

Once again the priority for both sides was game time for their players, so wholesale changes were made at half-time, much the same as against Nottingham Forest in the previous game.

This time around though the Reds were able to create more chances of their own, an early Dan Bradley free-kick causing problems for the Owls with both Matt Rhead and Harvey Grice seeing efforts blocked.

Later in the opening session Bradley fired wide from a Rob Evans pass and Shaun Tuton went close with a lob from a Rhead lay-off.

Wednesday of course had their moments, with Reds' keeper George Willis making significant saves from Josh Windass [24th minute], Charles Hagen [36th], Barry Bannan [43rd] and Olimade Shadipo [45th].

After the break it was replacement keeper Alfie Smith-Eccles who made encouraging saves from Green and Liam Waldock, whilst Wednesday's Dennis Adeiran and an unnamed trialist were each denied by the crossbar.

Again Alfreton had their moments, with Rio Molyneux seeing his angled drive held by Cameron Dawson on 47 minutes and Keiron Cummings also denied by the Owls' keeper nine minutes later.

Generally though it was their task to hold the visitors at bay, which they almost achieved, that is until Green latched on to a central through-ball to fire past Smith-Eccles with just seven minutes remaining.
