In this weeks edition catch Alpha FC updates and the latest squad news plus an exciting announcement regarding the launch of a new website

Last Time Out

On Saturday, after a two-week break from action, the First Team travelled to Radcliffe FC for Matchday 10. New signing Coby Hewitson was handed his Alfreton debut after joining from Sheffield United, following the news that George Willis was unavailable, having been given the opportunity to join the coaching staff for Sheffield United’s Championship away fixture at Hull City. The club are pleased to confirm that George Wilis will be available for selection for our next league game against Peterborough Sports.

After a solid opening 25 minutes, a quickfire double from the hosts - following an error from debutant Hewitson - left the Reds with a mountain to climb in difficult conditions, as driving rain and a swirling wind caused problems for both teams and led to a scrappy affair.

Alfreton improved in the second half, but it was Radcliffe who found the net again thanks to a bullet header from a corner from Brad Roscoe on 56 minutes.

A slick move was finished with aplomb by Jed Abbey with around 20 minutes to play, as he registered his first goal for Alfreton since returning to the club. However, Alfreton couldn’t build on it despite creating a number of opportunities, and it was the hosts who ran out 3-1 winners. The result meant it was fourteen away games without a win for Alfreton, stretching back to a 2-0 victory at Scarborough in February 2025.

Standings Update

The defeat at Radcliffe saw Alfreton drop one place from 20th to 21st in the league standings and back into the National League North relegation zone with nine points from ten games played. It continues to be very tight at this early stage of the campaign with just a goal difference separating Alfreton in 21st, AFC Telford in 20th and Bedford Town in 19th, who picked up their first away win against Worksop Town on Saturday.

Next up for the Reds

Alfreton now face another two-week break from competitive action before returning to the road on October 18 for a vital clash against 23rd placed Peterborough Sports.

Sports have also endured a difficult start to the season but recorded their first home win and their first home goals in a 2-1 victory over Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday. The win was all the sweeter as Peterborough recently appointed former Kidderminster Harriers manager Phil Brown as their new boss, following the departure of Michael Gash and Luke Steele.

Both teams have scored eight goals and conceded nineteen this season, suggesting a tight and tense affair is in prospect.

Latest Squad News

There have been two departures from the playing squad this week. Popular centre-back, Adam Anson, has had his contract terminated by mutual consent. Adam made 38 appearances and scored some crucial goals during his time with the Reds, delivering several impressive defensive performances, including the second goal in our 2-0 win against Marine this season and the equaliser away at Radcliffe on the final day of last season. Second-choice goalkeeper, Myles Wright, has also had his contract terminated by mutual consent, and everyone at the club would like to wish both players the very best in their future careers.

Furthermore, striker Ben Beresford, has left the club to join fellow National League North side Peterborough Sports for an undisclosed fee. Ben joined Alfreton in the summer after being released by Birmingham City and made a total of eight appearances in a Reds shirt (two starts and six as a substitute). We thank Ben for his efforts during his time with the club and wish him all the best in his future career.

Alfreton unveiled the signing of 18-year-old goalkeeper, Coby Hewitson, on a 28-day loan from EFL Championship side Sheffield United ahead of the Radcliffe game. Hewitson is highly regarded at the Blades, having flourished while coming through the academy setup at Bramall Lane. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Coby.
