Last Time Out
After a difficult start to the season, Alfreton returned to home soil on Saturday, 20th September, hosting AFC Telford United in a crucial Matchday Nine clash in the Enterprise National League North. Alfreton are no strangers to facing the Bucks, but this was the first meeting between the sides since February 2023, with AFC Telford returning after two seasons at Step Three following their relegation at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
In front of 451 fans, the decisive moment of a tight and hard-fought contest came just before half time. Nathan Newall slipped a ball down the flank to new striker Austin Samuels, who managed to get a touch before being brought down by visiting goalkeeper Josh Gracey. On his Reds debut, Samuels dusted himself off and calmly converted from the spot against Gracey, a fellow Wolves academy graduate, to hand Ofton the lead.
A brave, determined, and resolute defensive effort in the second half secured the precious first win for the interim management team, and a sixth consecutive win against our Shropshire opponents.
Standings Update
The win against AFC Telford United lifted Alfreton two places from 22nd to 20th in the National League North standings, with a record of two wins, three draws and four defeats. That result leaves us on nine points from nine games, with a goal difference of minus nine. It matches the record of AFC Telford, who sit one place above us in 19th due to their better goal difference.
Next up for the Reds
Alfreton are currently on a two-week hiatus from action after our early exit from the FA Cup against Spalding United. Our next league fixture is away at Radcliffe FC and is on the 4th of October.
Radcliffe bowed out of the FA Cup after a replay defeat to Southport, but they’ve started the league campaign strongly and sit inside the play-off places. They’ll provide a stern test for Alfreton, who are still chasing our first away win of the season.
Our scheduled National League North game at home to Spennymoor Town on Saturday, October 11th has been postponed due to the Durham side's progress in the FA Cup, with a new date for the fixture to be communicated in due course.
Our Interim Management Team
Our interim management team is made up of Demaro Woodruffe (Manager), Ryan Coneely (Head Coach), and Calum Flanagan (Assistant Coach). Since taking charge, they have guided the team to 4 points out of 6 in their first two National League North matches, providing stability and a positive start during this transitional period.
Demaro Woodruffe has experience as Director of the successful Global Performance Academy, which has collaborated with EFL clubs including Reading FC. His academy consistently produces players who climb the Non-League ladder; Demaro’s eye for talent and player development will be critical in ensuring the future success of the club. He also brings managerial experience from his time at Langley FC. At Alfreton Town, Demaro oversees long-term strategic decisions and operational processes, shaping the club’s direction and supporting its growth.
Ryan Coneely is our Interim First Team Head Coach and brings vast experience across a variety of coaching roles. He coached extensively at an Academy in the USA and spent three months scouting in India. Ryan has also worked with first teams at EFL clubs including Grimsby Town and Ipswich Town, served as Head of Football at Gordon Strachan’s Football Academy coaching aspiring players aged 16-19, and enjoyed a successful five-year spell managing Nuneaton Town Ladies in the National Women’s Premier Division. More recently, he has coached at Hednesford Town, who won promotion to Step 3, as well as Quorn AFC and Redditch United. Ryan is responsible for all on-field tactics, including formations, match-day strategies, and the design and delivery of all football-related training and performance elements.
The third member of the interim management team is Assistant First Team Coach Callum Flanagan. Calum came through the ranks at Aston Villa and is an experienced non-league centre back who has played for numerous clubs including Kettering Town, Hinkley United, Worcester City, Hednesford Town, Solihull Moors, Rushall Olympic, Halesowen Town, Redditch United, Hinkley AFC, and Bedworth United. The 33-year-old teamed up with Ryan Coneely as a management duo while they were both at Redditch United from January to November 2024. Calum’s extensive playing experience and familiarity with the league bring invaluable insight to the squad, helping guide players through the demands and challenges of National League North competition.
As a collective, our interim management team has already taken the first steps toward helping modernize Alfreton Town FC. Together, they worked to create an academy system and a comprehensive player development program, while also establishing a performance department with a strength and conditioning coach and sports scientist, and building an analytics unit to support data-driven insights. These early initiatives mark the beginning of a long-term vision to nurture talent, strengthen the squad, and secure sustainable success for the Reds.
Latest Squad News
We can confirm that loanees Owen German and Charlie Gill have returned to their respective parent clubs. Owen German made a total of 19 appearances for Ofton and always wore the shirt wholeheartedly and with pride, and the club would like to wish both him and Charlie all the very best with their football careers and thank them for their efforts while with us.
There have also been a number of recent additions to the playing squad. Fan favourite and last season's top scorer, Jed Abbey, has rejoined the squad along with new faces Austin Samuels and Aaron Keto-Diywara. Jed has signed a contract until the end of the season while both Austin and Aaron have signed on non-contract terms.
Austin arrives in DE55 from league rivals Spennymoor Town and brings a wealth of National League North experience, having also featured for Kidderminster Harriers and Rushall Olympic last season, where he scored against the Reds in a 1-1 draw at the Impact Arena. Samuels came through the academy at Wolverhampton Wanderers and made the perfect start to life with the Reds as he powered home the decisive penalty to earn a vital three points against AFC Telford United.
Aaron Keto-Diyawa has also joined the Reds’ ranks and, like Austin, is a product of the Wolves academy. The 22-year-old was highly regarded at Molineux and put in an impressive display as a debutant against AFC Telford United.
Injury News
Central defender Max Hunt is back fit and available for selection after a recent nose injury. Fellow defender and club stalwart Josh Clackstone is back in training with his progress being closely monitored.
Attacking players Siya Ligendza and Billy Fewster are also back in full training and both should be available for selection for the upcoming away game against Radcliffe on October 4th.
Under-23 Professional Development Programme Update
Alfreton’s Under-23s continued their excellent run with a dominant 5-1 away win today against Steven Gerrard’s Academy in Liverpool. Logan Dimmock-Fox (2), Mert Apat, Arnold Marimbe, and Halim Bangura all found the back of the net to secure a comprehensive victory.
Last week, on 22nd September, the U23s recorded a 4-1 home win against Macclesfield FC. Ben Beresford starred with a hat-trick and Quelle Weekes added the fourth to seal a deserved win.
We thank all supporters who attended both matches and cheered the team on. The results have helped Alfreton climb to fourth place in the league standings.
The Under-23s are next in action at home on Monday 13th October 2025, when they welcome IDA Sheffield.
Under-19 Academy
Matt Carbon’s young Reds recently exited the FA Youth Cup after a 6-0 away defeat at Ossett United in the First Qualifying Round.
However, last Wednesday afternoon, goals from Kaigh Spencer and Dawid Malysza secured the youngsters’ first victory of the season, a 2-0 home win over Oldham Athletic in the National League Under-19 Division I. The result lifted Alfreton to seventh in the standings.
The Draw for the First Round of the Academy League Cup has also been made, with Alfreton handed a home tie with Rochdale AFC to be played on Wednesday 22nd October 2025.
