Just 68 days after suffering a play off heartbreak to eventual promotion winners Kidderminster Harriers in the elimination round back in May Alfreton Town begin their Pre Season schedule on Saturday afternoon with the visit of local rivals Chesterfield FC.
The Spiretes suffered some play off heartache of their own at the National Stadium in a pulsating final that was a great advert for the Vanarama National League as Notts County earned promotion to the promise land of the EFL winning through on penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw in the National League Promotion Final.
Chesterfield are one of the favourites to win the National League outright this season and put down an earlier marker on Tuesday night when they recorded their best ever friendly victory a 9-0 thrashing of local rivals Matlock Town.
Therefore Reds manager Billy Heath heading in to his sixth season at the helm will be under no illusions at the task in hand as Alfreton look to get some minutes into the legs of the squad at this early stage of preseason.
Unlike in recent seasons there has been several changes in personnel at the Impact Arena during the off season.
Eight men have departed while there have been 9 new acquisitions of some familiar and some less familiar faces.
Amongst those to leave for pastures new are Dom Smith, Conor Branson, Bailey Hobson who of course signed for Chesterfield, Dayle Southwell, Tom Denton, Milan Butterfield, Ahmed Salam and Peter Dearle.
Billy Heath has been busy in the transfer market and has made 9 additions to the squad. Returning to the Reds for a second spell are striker Jake Day who was mostly recently with Spennymoor Town, Lewis Salmon who scored once in 8 apps as a Nottingham Forest loanee in the 2021/22 season and James Oliver.
Furthermore experienced centre back Shaun Brisley has joined from Derbyshire rivals Buxton and fellow defender Kennedy Digie has signed from Gloucester City who also lost in the elimination round of the play offs last campaign.
The squad has also been strengthened in attacking areas with the acquisition of Jamie Walker from Long Eaton United, Declan Howe from Cleethorpes Town, vastly experienced striker Ryan Taylor from EFL side Grimsby Town and more recently the signing of ex Sheffield Wednesday youngster Liam Waldock for an undisclosed fee from Gainsborough Trinity who scored an impressive 17 goals in 44 games last season.
