Alfreton Town returned from deepest Worcestershire on Tuesday evening with three points after a magnificent display to a man saw the Reds shock Kidderminster Harriers to record a second fine away day success in quick succession in National League North.
Reds manager Billy Heath selected the same squad that had won 2-1 a few days earlier at Harriers` local rivals Hereford with Milan Butterfield named on the bench against his former employers.
It was Alfreton who started the brighter of the two sides as a Dayle Southwell corner in the third minute was flicked on to Yusifu Ceesay who saw his header held by home keeper Luke Simpson.
The hosts won a set piece of their own in the sixth minute but Omari Sterling`s effort was comfortably saved by Reds keeper George Willis.
The first half was short on clear chances for either side in truth but Yusifu Ceesay was first to a bouncing ball and burst in to the box with only Simpson to bear but contrived to shoot wide of the post in the 14th minute.
The game was physical throughout and a flurry of bookings ensued in the remainder of the first half. Josh Wilde, Adam Lund and Conor Branson were cautioned for the Reds by Referee Reuben Ricardo along with Joe Foulkes of Kidderminster who was booked for taking out Yusifu Ceesay when in full flight.
In the 38th minute a rasping Adam Lund drive was palmed away for a corner by Simpson before Alfreton went the closest to breaking the deadlock of either side in the first half when in the 42nd minute, Alfreton number 8 Lund, saw his shot strike the angle of bar and post after a scramble in the area.
The two sides went into the interval on level terms but it was to Billy Heath who would have been the happier of the two managers with the Reds doing the majority of the pressing.
The second half began with Dwayne Wiley charging down Kidderminster first shot on target for a corner before moments later the dangerous Omari Sterling saw a long range shot from all of 35 yards fly wide.
In the 53rd minute former Alfreton Town favourite Amari Morgan Smith had Harrier`s clearest sight of goal all evening when he headed a wide freekick from the left against the upright.
The hosts had appeared a slick operation and proved too strong for Alfreton when the sides had met earlier in the season but there were precious few signs of the fluency that had allowed Harriers to record a 4-1 win at the Impact Arena with some impressive goals.
Kidderminster Harriers manager Russ Penn made his full quote of changes in the second half but the determined Reds backline remained resolute and a third 1-0 away win at Aggborough in the last 4 seasons was sealed in the 74th minute.
Following the concession of a needless freekick by Harriers, Dayle Southwell delivered a peach of a cross in to the area towards the head of Matt Rhead who expertly guided a glancing header beyond home keeper Simpson and in to the corner with the aid of a post to send the 37 traveling Reds contingent in to delirium.
Southwell and Wiley picked bookings to take the tally to 5 but despite personnel changes in search of an equalizer it was Alfreton who could have extended their advantage when Yusifu Ceesay was put clear on goal in the 85th minute only for Simpson to stand strong and block his shot.
Alfreton saw out eight minutes of added time with no dramas to record a satisfying victory and while the win did not alter their league position it will surely have boosted morale ahead of the visit of an inform Darlington FC to the Impact Arena as the Reds search for a first home win in six outings on Saturday.
