Alfreton Town are set to make the short journey to Lincolnshire to lock horns with second placed Scunthorpe United in a hugely important and potentially pivotal National League North fixture on Saturday.
After a typically determined and hard working performance which has become synonymous with the Reds under the excellent stewardship of manager Billy heath on Tuesday night against South Shields a number of crucial calls from the referee went against Ofton on the night. Some slick play from the visitors was also key to the result as the dangerous Paul Blackett grabbed a brace and defender Coleby Sheppard scored a brace of his own to seal a 4-2 win for the Mariners.
Lewis Salmon had given Alfreton the lead on 32 minutes, this after Adam Lund looked to have scored from a corner but the ref adjudged the ball hadnt crossed the line.
Paul Blackett then level the scores on 37 minutes before the most controversial moment of an eventful evening as George Willis was given a second yellow card for a foul after mis controlling the ball outside of his area.
Alfreton continued to battle commendably with 10 men but by the time substitute Jed Abbey scored against his former team it was only a consolation as Shields left with a 4-2 win as Alfreton`s first red card in 39 proved key to the result.
Alfreton have not lost back to back National League North matches since the August Bank Holiday of 2023 when a 3-2 home defeat by Darlington was following up by a 2-1 rverse on the road at Kings Lynn 48 hours later.
That record will probably face its toughest examination since with Saturday`s trip to Glanford Park to face full time and much fancied Scunthorpe United.
Despite being second in the league table the recent form of the Iron has been inconsistent at best with Scunthorpe winning only three of their last 10. Having played a couple games more than their promotion rivals its an important game for Andy Bulter`s side for different reasons.
Alfreton faced heartbreak on their last visit to Glanford Park as a Will Evan`s header in the fourth minute of stoppage time proved the difference after a solid defensive display from the Reds.
Scunthorpe head in to the fixture on the back of a goalless draw away at Darlington in midweek and indeed lost their last home game to Derbyshire opposition in Buxton after an hat trick from Coleman.
