Fresh from the exhilaration of Saturday`s win over Macclesfield FC which secured a place in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in five years, Alfreton Town return to the rigours of the National League North with a long trip south to face Gloucester City on Saturday.
The Reds have fallen to 10th place in the league standings due to their inactivity thanks to their continued participation in the FA Cup.ahead of the game. However it continues to be very congested in the league standings with just three points separating Farsley Celtic in 13th and Curzon Ashton in 5th. Tamworth continue to lead the way ahead of Spennymoor on goal difference with Saturday`s opponents Gloucester City languishing down in 23rd place.
The Tigers have experienced a difficult season to date. They have managed just one win from their 12 league fixtures to date, a 2-0 home win over Rushall Olympic back in August.
The lack of form forced new Chairman Patrick Chambers to dispense of manager Tim Flowers after Gloucester crashed out of the FA Cup back in September. The new boss was announced as former manager Mike Cook back in charge for his second spell with the club.
The former Cambridge United and York City player was previously in charge of the Tigers between January and November 2019.Gloucester City are 6 games without a win in the league with Billy Heath`s side going in to the game 8 games unbeaten in all competitions.Alfreton are in a really good vein of form with Jordan Thewlis returning to the team after several weeks out and finding the net in the opening minutes against Macclesfield to take his season goal tally to five.
Alfreton will be without the services of Lewis Salmon who has an extended period on the sidelines. Kennedy Digie, one of a number of outstanding performers against Macclesfield, will come up against his former employers on Saturday.
After a chequered past on an artificial surface in previous seasons Alfreton will hope to build on the win at 3g Tamworth back in August.
