Alfreton Town return their attention back to the Emirates FA Cup on Tuesday night and the "Road to Wembley" as they head to deepest Bedfordshire in the Third Qualifying Round of the competition to face Biggleswade Town for the very first time.
After squeezing past hard working Spalding United on penalties in the previous round following a stunning and dramatic equalizer from Billy Whitehouse to force the penalty shoot out the Reds while eager to replicate last season's magic run whilst being sure not to underestimate their opponents.
The original tie was due to take place on Saturday but was postponed due to wet weather in the area. Following the draw the winner of the tie will be home to National League North side Spennymoor Town after they beat Chorley in the last round.
Similarly to Spalding United, Biggleswade Town won promotion from Step 4 last season by being crowned Southern League Central Division One title and now operate in the Southern League Premier Central (Step 3) the same division as the Tulips. Moreover, Biggleswade Town travelled to Spalding United on Saturday in a league fixture and were beaten 3-2 by the Tulips with a 16 year old keeper between the sticks on loan from Stevenage.
In fact Biggleswade Town, nicknamed the Waders, only got their first league win of the league season at the ninth attempt on Tuesday evening 2-1 away at Bishop Stortford who of course competed in the National League North last campaign.
Ahead of the game Biggleswade Town sit in 21st place in their league one place and two points adrift of Spalding. Biggleswade Town are not to be underestimated however as they have advanced to the fourth and final qualifying round in each of the last two seasons as a Step 4 side.
The Waders lost 7-0 to Farnborough in 2022/23 and 4-1 to National League side Solihull Moors last year but their striker JJ Lacey did have the dubious distinction of finishing Emirates FA Cup top goalscorer. So far in this years edition the Waders have beaten Harleston Town 3-1 in a replay and Bowers and Pitsea 2-1 away from home in the last round.
There are actually three non league clubs in the town Town who play at Step 3, Biggleswade FC at Step 4, founded in 2016 and Biggleswade United owned by Sky Sports Spanish Football expert Guilem Balague!
The winners of the tie will earn £5625 with the losers £1875
Billy Heath`s men head in to the game in solid form unbeaten in 11 matches in all competitions.
Last time out a late own goal secured Alfreton a hard fought three points on the road in National League North at Aggborough against Kidderminster Harriers as the Reds rose to fifth place in the league with 16 points from their 9 games played. Thats two points and three places better off than last season.
