Alfreton Town turn their attention back to the Emirates FA Cup on Friday evening when they make the very short trip over the county border to Nottingham to take on of the oldest clubs in the world in an eagerly anticipated clash with EFL League Two side Notts County in the First Round Proper of the competition.
On their twelfth venture in to the Proper Rounds of the historical competition Alfreton are yet to topple the might of a EFL outfit and will be sure to have their work cut out if they are going to break that duck against the Magpies.
Notts sit inside the automatic promotion places in League Two with a record similar to that of the Reds having PLD 14 W7 D5 L2 with 26 points.
The `Pies are managed by boss Stuart Maynard who worked previous part time as manager of National League outfit Wealdstone where he successfully kept the London outfit in the top tier of non league football against the odds. Notts County is Maynard`s first position as a full time manager and he has started this season well after guiding Notts County to a mid table finish last term following his appointment in January 2024.
Notts County have only lost one of their last six League Two outings and boast a formidable squad including David McGoldrick, full Malta international Jodi Jones and Gambian striker Allasana Jatta who has played in Estonia and Denmark during his career.
Alfreton Town head in to the game in fine fettle themselves. A very rare defeat against Spennymoor was wiped from the memory after a 3-1 win at Rushall Olympic got Billy Heath`s men back to winning ways. An early goal from top scorer jed Abbey and late goals from super subs Jake Day, his first in the National League North this season and Lewis Salmon his first goal since Boxing Day 2023 sealed a deserved win on the road.
Alfreton Town have never played at Meadow Lane but have played at the City Ground.
In the first season after the Merger between Alfreton United and Alfreton Miners Welfare, 1959/60 a Centre Alliance league game against Nottingham Forest (A) was moved to the City Ground after the original venue was walter logged in 1960.
Ofton`s longest serving player Josh Clackstone had a loan spell at Notts County from Hull City in 2017 before signing for the Reds the following year. Clacky made eight appearances for Notts during his loan spell.
Billy Heath will be under no illusions at the difficulty of the task at hand but the Reds boss has done a magnificent job compelling a squad full of heart, grit hard work and determination while building a great team spirit and will to work for each other within every member of the squad.
The Reds are sure to play with bundles of pride, passion and a strength of togetherness throughout so might sure you are at Meadow Lane on what could be a historical night for Ofton!
