The new signing sat down to speak with the media team earlier this week

New midfield signing Ahmed Salam spoke with Jacob Hackett recently ahead of the Reds’ clash with Gloucester City this weekend.

The former Hull City man spoke of his reasoning for linking up with Alfreton, and revealed that manager Billy Heath convinced him to join the Reds with the club’s positive aspirations writes Szymon Gasiorowski.

“Billy’s influence was massive. He used to watch the Hull U23s so I’ve always known of him,” he said.

“We had a chat and he told me about his plans, how he wants to play and that we want to be pushing for the playoffs.

“That’s something I want to do. I want to push the team to get into the playoffs and I don’t see why we couldn’t as we’re a good team.”

The 21-year-old joined the Reds two weeks ago and believes he has made a seamless transition into life at his new club.

He has impressed since his arrival, helping his side pick up seven points from their last nine, but confirms the lack of pre-season has been a tough hurdle to overcome physically.

“I’m settling in quite well. It has all happened fast, but the lads have been brilliant, it only took me two or three training sessions to really get to know them.

“It’s been a positive start for me in the league,” he stated.

“No pre-season has made it tough on the legs, but I feel good and just want to score my first goal. I have the players around me that will push me and help me do that.”

Talking about his personal goals and ambitions for the season, he said: “I try to go for double figures in both goals and assists, so that is my ambition.

“I have started the season late but hopefully I can get off the mark soon. The most important aim though is to finish in the playoffs.

“We have a great group of lads here, if we concentrate game by game and let the performances do the talking, I know we have every chance of finishing up there.”

Salam believes building momentum is key for his side as they look to push up the table and is confident of another good result at the weekend against Gloucester.

“Every team in the league will have threats. If we approach the game with the right mindset, we know we can get all three points as we’re a good side and make it tough for everyone.”
